The Butterfly Moves On

Guilt is such a universal feeling that we all experience when we want to get out of something or move away from something, but we feel bad about it.  We feel bad about letting people down or hurting people’s feelings.  At the same time, we are so often ensconced in what is familiar to us that even though it no longer serves us and we may not feel happy in that situation,  we can’t seem to get ourselves out of it.

Guilt is such a universal feeling that we all experience when we want to get out of something or move away from something, but we feel bad about it.  We feel bad about letting people down or hurting people’s feelings.  At the same time, we are so often ensconced in what is familiar to us that even though it no longer serves us and we may not feel happy in that situation,  we can’t seem to get ourselves out of it.

Think about friendships that have gone by the wayside.  We can feel guilty about it and tell ourselves that we must re-connect, but the reality is that that person or relationship may no longer serve you.  In fact, it may actually drain you.  Think about the social circle you mix in – where your friends have expectations of you to show up and be the fun one, and sometimes you may just not feel like it.  You may go out with these people but feel in fact, that they don’t get you anymore, they don’t see you for who you truly are and how you want to be seen.  Despite feeling this way, you still stick with it.

The saying ‘old habits die hard” is still used today for just that reason.

Now think about how that feeling, or guilt, disappointment or dread are actually serving you?  They are in fact level one energy – the type of energy that drains you and eventually makes you unwell.  That doesn’t sound like very good service to me!

Think about a caterpillar.  It hangs out with its mates feeding off the cabbage leaves and socialising, working together, and being part of a community.  Eventually, that caterpillar has to go into a cocoon.  It has to have some time on its own and space to itself in order to evolve.  What does it evolve into?  A butterfly!  A beautiful colourful butterfly with wings to fly!  If its fellow caterpillars didn’t evolve in the same way, the butterfly has nothing left in common with its old mates.  It has to fly off into new adventures and explore its new world.  Its old life doesn’t serve it anymore, and it has to let go of that past, and move forward into a new life.

Letting go and surrendering - simply allowing with no attachment to the outcome is the most freeing thing you can do. We spend so much time trying to control things and force our way through.
